Particulars of Positions held by Shri Nityanand Rai

He was elected four times (2000-2014) as a member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly. After winning the Hajipur Assembly seat in 2000, he was a member of the Legislative Assembly persistently till 2014 including two Elections held for the entire Bihar Legislative Assembly during 2005. Since 2014, he is being elected as the Lok Sabha member from the Ujiarpur Parliamentary Constituency of Bihar.

He was a Member of Standing Committee on Agriculture from September, 2014 to August, 2018, Member of Standing Committee on Commerce from September, 2018 to May, 2019, Member of Joint Committee on the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement (Second Amendment) Bill, 2015 since May, 2015.

Shri Nityanand Rai was born on 1st January 1966 in a farmer's family in the remote village of Karnpura, 4 km from Hajipur Headquarters in Vaishali District of Bihar. His mother, Late Smt. Tetri Devi was a homemaker. His father, Late Shri Ganga Vishnu Rai was the Pradhan of Gram Panchayat Karnapura for many years. Shri Rai completed his graduation (Hons) from Raj Narayan College of Babasaheb Bhim Rao Ambedkar University.

Shri Rai had interest in social service since his student days and started social work as a member of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad in 1982. In a very short span of time, he held the responsibility of District Head of ABVP, followed by Tehsil Karyavahak of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. Shri Rai joined the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) in 1990 and started working at the block level.

Holding the responsibilities of the Department Head, Mantri and State General Secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, he took charge as the President of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha in 1998 for the state of Bihar. In the Year 2000, he was elected to the Bihar Legislative Assembly from the Hajipur assembly constituency. Later, he held the post of State Secretary, General Secretary and Vice-President of the BJP unit in Bihar. In 2014 Lok Sabha Elections, he became the Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) from Ujiarpur (Bihar). He was assigned charge of the State President of Bihar Bhartiya Janata Party on 30 November 2016. As president of the Bihar Bhartiya Janata Party unit, he strengthened the party at the village and booth level. In the Lok Sabha Election-2019, the BJP and its allies won an unprecedented 39 out of 40 seats under the presidentship of Shri Rai.Shri Rai was elected Member of Parliament from Ujiarpur Lok Sabha for the second time in 2019 and was given the responsibility of Minister of State for Home Affairs in the Modi Government. He was elected to the Lok Sabha for the third time in 2024 and re-assigned the responsibility as Minister of State for Home Affairs in the Modi Government.

Social Work

  • Every year, he bears the living, education and other expenses of 5 orphan children living in Vatsalya Gram (run by Sadhvi Ritambara ji) in Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh.
  • Has adopted three underprivileged minor girls who were victims of gang rape from outside the constituency and has taken responsibility for their education untill their marriage.
  • 43 children affected by polio were adopted and efforts were made to provide them with complete medical treatment through surgery, along with all other forms of assistance. Many children have been freed from polio.
  • On the auspicious occasion of the birthday of the Hon’ble Prime Minister, support and cooperation is extended in the education of the orphan children of Vatsalya Gram.
  • While teaching at degree college, free book bank and free coaching were arranged for economically weaker students.
  • Has been honoured twice for donating blood and conducting blood donation camp in Bihar
