This scheme was necessary considering the fact that this specialised unit in the FSL needed to be fast-tracked taking into account the increased reliance by the courts on forensic evidence. The scheme will specifically be for addressing the needs of the States/UTs, through a demand-gap analysis process, and enabling projects for strengthening the DNA analysis and Cyber-forensics capacities in the State FSLs.
To ensure timely, credible, and scientific investigation in criminal cases, particularly those involving sexual offences and cybercrimes, the Government of India had launched focused initiatives in 2018 to strengthen forensic infrastructure across the country by enhancing DNA and cyber forensic capabilities of State Forensic Science Laboratories. With this assistance, DNA and Cyber Forensic facilities have been upgraded in all State FSLs. This support has enabled faster and more reliable scientific analysis for ongoing investigations.
